Funds theoretical and experimental research into the physical principles distinguishing living systems from inanimate matter (the origin, principles, and signs of life) via an open two-page Letter-of-Inquiry process; promising LOIs are invited to full proposals. Seed grants run up to $50,000/year for two years and theory grants up to $120,000/year for five years (experimental awards may be larger).
